Description of the problemUpon entering my vehicle i found that the driver's side seat belt was locked and unable to retract or be pulled forward. I contacted a local toyota dealership, chicago northside toyota, and made a service appt for that afternoon. Shortly before arriving at the dealership the seat belt suddenly unlocked and was movable again. Upon inspection, the service technician told me that there was fraying on the seat belt, and that was the cause for the inability for the seatbelt to retract or move. None of this fraying he referred to is visible to me, so i presume it is hidden inside the panel which covers the seat belt mechanism. I presume this was caused by an internal mechanism and i suspect is a design defect. Toyota will not honor any warranty for seat belt replacement after 5 yrs or 50,000 miles, which no longer applies to my vehicle, and is charging me $453 to replace the seat belt as a result of what i believe is a defect for an essential safety restraint. Please investigate.
