Description of the problemFailed rear end differential at only 75,000 miles. Driving on highway when a loud bang came from the rear end. Made it home, but more popping and banging noises along the way, especially turning under acceleration. Drained rear differential fluid and removed cover, metal chunks and shavings in case. This vehicle has the "big tow" package on it and has never been used to tow anything. It has been mostly on the highway and off road very infrequently and never heavy-duty off road. It is very fortunate that the failed rear end did not cause the vehicle to lock the rear axle and cause a severe accident. This is a very common issue on this model of vehicle, and in my opinion is due to a faulty locking rear differential. Nissan will not admit this, because the entire rear axle assembly needs to be replaced and it is very expensive. Now that the 2005 model year trucks are getting a bit older, these failures are becoming extremely common and it is only a matter of time until one fails on the freeway and somebody is injured or killed when the vehicle's rear axle locks up due to an exploded spider gear assembly.
