Description of the problemWhile driving my 2009 nissan murano approximately 60 mph on i-5 from portland, or to my home in washington the front part of my sunroof shattered for no apparent reason. There was an explosive sound before shards of glass rained down on the inside of my car. My sunroof was closed at the time but the shade part was open. Some of the shards measured approximately 6 inches in length. It was a nice sunny day out and the approximate time of the incident was 6:00 pm. There were no overpasses in the vicinity where the incident occurred. I was not traveling near any dump trucks or other vehicles that was carrying any cargo. I could find no evidence of flying debris to cause the glass to shatter. I have contacted nissan dealership in my area and was quoted a price of $1,311. 00 plus taxes to replace the shattered glass. Fortunately, i was the only person in the vehicle at the time and was able to get over from the 2nd lane to the side of the road to deal with the large amounts of shattered glass that was found in both the front and back seats of my car. It was a very unnerving situation to be in and i did look to if see any other drivers in the area appeared to be effected by my sunroof shattering. I did not see evidence that any other drivers were effected by my sunroof shattering. I did take several photos of the shattered glass for my records. I have also kept larger fragments of the shattered glass for evidentiary purposes because i will be sending a demand letter to nissan to cover the cost based on previous reports i have just now found out about. I don't feel my murano is safe to drive knowing that the sunroof may explode again for no apparent reason. I will be driving with my shade closed on my sunroof which defeats purpose of having a sunroof but safety comes first.
