Description of the problem2006 nissan murano. Front driver's 8-way power seat. My wife told me that one side of the seat, the right (transmission selector) side, was jammed and would not move forward and back causing the seat to "pivot" in position. I could not see an foreign object stuck under the seat that would cause this so i took it to the local chrysler dealer. They told me that the gears that mesh together to direct the movement of the seat were stripped and that the entire 8-way rack mechanism had to be replaced, to the tune of over $900. 00!!. The service tech said that this was a common problem on the murano and is usually caused when the driver leans back hard against the back of the seat and lifts up his or her fanny, as when entering the vehicle and adjusting pant legs or a dress before starting to drive (something everyone does all the time). After reluctantly paying to have this work done i took the old seat rack home and took it apart. Sure enough, two gears on the right-hand side of the rack were stripped of several worm-teeth, however, the gears themselves are less than 1/2" in diameter and made of cheap nylon! You would think that these would be made of metal. Also, the gears themselves could be removed quite easily from the assembly. I don't understand at all why the entire seat assembly had to be replaced except as a profit maker for the dealer. After seeing all of the exact same complaints on this particular vehicle on various car complaint web-sites it is obvious that nissan should be required to recall these vehicles and replace these defective gears.
