| Description of the problem | Tl* the contact owns a 2004 mercury mountaineer. The contact stated that a loud popping noise could be heard whenever the vehicle was shifted into reverse. The contact also stated that the vehicle would jerk into reverse and a burning odor was present during one of the occurrences. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop on various occasions and the contact was informed that the transmission fluid needed to be replaced. The transmission fluid was replaced on numerous occasions, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
