| Description of the problem | The first time i lost the brakes i was going through a roundabout when i had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a car that pulled out in front of me. As i deployed the brakes, i hit a pothole which caused the abs to activate. The pedal went to the floor and i had to quickly change lanes to avoid an accident. It took several hours for brakes to return to normal. The second time, i slammed on my brakes when traffic came to an immediate halt. I had plenty of time to stop, but again when the antilock brakes were activated, i lost pedal and had to go into the median to avoid rear-ending the car in from of me. Again, several hours later the brakes returned to normal. I was able to create a similar scenario to show my husband just by slamming on my brakes at the end of our neighborhood where sand laid on the asphalt. He bled the brakes and the problem appeared to be resolved, but unfortunately it was not. The last time it happened, my 19 year old daughter was driving it. She lost pedal after antilock brakes were activated and, being a new driver, clipped the vehicle in front of her. Fortunately no one was hurt and we were able to resolve the accident without involving authorities. After this i have not allowed her to drive the car and it sits in the garage as we debate fixing the cosmetic damage due to the brake problems. The date below is an approximate date of the first time it happened. The last time it happened was in august 2016. It has happened approximately 5 times through the years, but has been few and far in between since it is not often the abs is activated. The only time it has been driven since august was to take it through emissions. |
