| Description of the problem | The plastic oil filter housing cracked at about 80,000 miles causing a major engine oil leak from the top of the engine. Oil has leaked down and splattered all over the undercarriage of the vehicle and onto the exhaust pipe causing significant smoking and a potential fire hazard. The mechanic advised that this is a common failure on 3. 6l pentastar v6 engines and the the only fix is a replacement of the part. The mechanic also provided his opinion that the cause of the failure is a poor design due to material durability. The vehicle has been maintained at its regular intervals and has received light to moderate use over its lifetime so far with mostly highway miles. |
