Description of the problemThe air conditioning went out on my 2014 jeep grand cherokee. Apparently this is a common problem with these vehicles. The dealer's service writer immediately told me that 85% of the time when the a/c goes out in this vehicle it's the evaporator inside the car behind the dash. Upon further examination by the repair technician that's what needed to be replaced. I asked if they replace the evaporator with the same part and he said no, they now use a different sku replacement evaporator. Obviously, jeep is aware of this problem and has made changes to fix it. However, in my case jeep won't pay for the replacement saying my vehicle with 45,000 miles is past the warranty period. It's my position that jeep used a defective evaporator in the first place and it's only my bad luck that it did not start leaking freon sooner. Apparently the evaporator is not *that* expensive but it is located in a difficult location to get to, behind the dashboard, and that makes it an expensive repair ($1,680). I believe jeep/chrysler should pay for this repair at a minimum, and failing that, a recall should be put into effect.
