Description of the problemJeep grand cherokees have a integrated roof flush rail. It is standard equipment on this jeep. Racks and recreational objects such as kayaks, canoes, surf boards and bikes are attached to the racks that are in turn attached to the flush rail. The flush rail failed and two kayaks were pulled off the roof during mild to moderate desert winds. This failure resulted in two kayaks and the thule rack equipment being thrown off the roof onto the highway. The roof rails are only attached to the roof with compression nuts and the roof is not reinforced in the area of the flush rails. This design is seriously under engineered and extremely dangerous. The thule racks and straps held the kayaks together which resulted in 100 pounds of kayak, approximate 17 feet by 4 feet thrown in the path of oncoming vehicles. Jeep has been informed and takes no responsibility for this failure.
