| Description of the problem | My 2005 jeep grand cherokee suddenly lost all power on ca hwy 17 during rush hour. It was as if the ignition switch was turned off. This nearly caused a multi-car collision, followed by a terrifying near miss by a motorcycle. After several attempts, where the ignition switch acted completely dead, the car suddenly re-started. I understand that there is a recall related to the ignition switch, but the documentation i've seen implies that drivers are hitting the keys with their knees. I can assure you that i was on a straight stretch of (very busy) highway, and there was no contact between me and the keys. In addition, there were a total of four keys on the key chain, with no other significant weight. I'll be happy to weigh the entire keychain and send a photo of the digital scale results, but this was not a case of having a large mass on the keychain. The jeep almost killed me. The jeep dealer had the vehicle for three days, and cannot reproduce the problem, and informed me that parts to replace the ignition switch are not available, and there is no estimated delivery date for the parts. They also recommended not driving the vehicle. My concern is that the recall is misrepresented by chrysler, and is more dangerous than the recall implies. Of course, i'm also concerned that i have a 4500 lb brick in my driveway until this can be resolved, and must rent or lease another vehicle in the (indeterminate) interim. I'll be more than happy to submit the vehicle for any testing or diagnostics requested, as long as i don't have to drive it anywhere without an escort vehicle. |
