Description of the problemBeginning at about 19000 miles the gear shift lights would all come on at random times while driving. Stopping the jeep and switching it off would make the lights go off. At about 90000 miles in addition to the lights coming on the shifter, the dash would light up with "service shifter" message. Once again stopping and turning off the vehicle and restarting as many as 5 times would make the message and lights go off. The vehicle is serviced regularly at the jeep delearship and was checked several times with no errors showing on computer. After going on line to research this problem, i found numerous websites with people having the same problem and stating that there should be a recall due to the large number of vehicles involved. About 2 months ago the same message and lights came on and it took over 10 minutes of trying to start before i could get the message off and able to put the jeep into gear to continue on my way home (was over 2 hours from home on this trip). The jeep dealership ordered parts that they said should fix it (i was originally told that it was not problem as long as it was going off). I spent over $500. 00 getting this fixed. Since this is a recurrent problem with so many people, i believe that there should be a recall to fix the problem. This is also a danger to drivers leaving them stranded beside the road because of this defect. From the on line forums this is a problem with all models and year makes of jeeps. My jeep started this problem before the warranty was up (at 19000 miles). However since it was not repaired (and i hope it is) until after the warranty had expired, i had to pay over $500. 00 for what i believe should have been a recall. It took over a month for parts to come to dealership for repair.
