Description of the problemWhen the cruise control is active, pushing the button to decelerate occasionally causes the vehicle to downshift and begin accelerating. Manually disengaging the cruise control or pushing the brake pedal halts the acceleration. This appears to be a dangerous failure mode. The dealership that examined the vehicle said this is due to a defective clock spring in the steering column that can cause buttons to perform the opposite task or fail to work at all. The dealer noted that this is not an uncommon issue. The vehicle has approximately 50,000 miles and the repair is not extremely expensive at $485. It seems that it would be much safer if the failure mode was to simply not allow the cruise control to engage when a fault is detected.
