Description of the problem	While making a slow right hand turn a loud noise was heard. A grinding noise from the left front wheel area continued while driving slowing thereafter whenever the wheel was turned slightly. This could have been catastrophic if this failure occurred at highway speed, resulting in a possible loss of steering function. Upon disassembly of the left side strut assembly, it was found that the upper spring mount had corroded to a point that there was insufficient material remaining to sustain the load levels exhibited by the vehicle on the strut. The mount had literally broke into 2 main pieces. It appears failure was due to excessive corrosion due to road salt use during the winter months. It was also determined that the left side wiper pivot had a rubber diverter under it which actually let the water from the cowl area drain directly onto the top of the strut mount. This might have also contributed to the amount of corrosion present. Right side strut was also repaired as a precaution. There was less corrosion of the upper spring mount present and imminent failure probably would not have occurred for a period of time.
