Description of the problemExperienced unexpected downhift into first gear at highway speed. Transmission was erratic in gear selection with corresponding tachometer and spedometer oscillations. Had six occurences with various degrees of severity . Called ford help line . All they said was that there were no recalls on this vehicle. Vehicle is " unsafe " to drive . Got the truck into the ford dealer and hadf it coded. Truck was showing codes for defective output speed sensor. The " lead frame " had to be replaced at " my expense ". No reprogramming was done because there was " no recall " at that time . The root cause was repaired but there was still the possibility of a violent down shift event . I have since received notification of a expanded recall to reprogram and prevent the dramatic and violent downshift issue. I am going to get the truck in asap to get this done . The original recall language stated that if the vehicle was having the downshift issues and tested positive for defective output speed sensor that ford would " replace the lead frame and reprogram " free of charge and also warrantee the components for i think 150,000 miles. I feel that i have had to make this vehicle " safe to drive " at my expense. The real fix is to replace the lead frame and reprogram . I was just lucky that there was no oncoming traffic when i experienced the dramatic down shift into first gear and had to manuver to the shoulder of the road . I feel bad for any one else that has to go through this. Ford is getting off on the " cheap ' by not doing the " complete " fix. Very !!!!!!!!! Unhappy ford owner.
