Description of the problemThe vehicle has 9 bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the engine. The owner smelled strong exhaust smell in the cabin. He removed the exhaust manifold from vehicle and found that 4 of the 9 bolts had failed and were broken off flush with the engine block. There was exhaust residue in the immediate area of the 1st and 5th cylinder port indicating that exhaust gas was being discharged into the engine bay. The failure is an alarming safety event because of the potential for hot exhaust to cause a fire in the engine compartment and the potential for asphyxiation due to contaminated cabin air. This is also an environmental control failure because a portion of the exhaust gas iss bypassing the catalytic converters. The owner is the original owner and all equipment is original. He is a degreed mechanical engineer and has worked in automotive component manufacturing. Gm was contacted directly and the owner directed to see the dealership. The owner provided the dealership with the attached photos but then refused to inspect the vechicle without first collecting a "diagnostic fee." the owner refused.
