Description of the problem | While investigating a front tire with an air leak, it was discovered that the outer rim (where the tire bead seats) of the steel oem wheel had split away from the rest of the rim for a circumferential length of over 10 inches near the tire bead sealing surface. It appears that the outer portion of the rim was almost to the point of separating from the rest of the wheel and allowing the tire to dismount from the wheel. If that had occurred in traffic, the results easily could have resulted in serious injury. This is a 17 inch six lug oem wheel with the chrome clad front surface from a four wheel drive f-150. This wheel was removed from service, but we are concerned about other similar wheels on this and other trucks and would be interested to know which other wheel types have the potential for similar defects due to similar manufacturing techniques. |
